The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has added nine per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) to the Toxics Release Inventory (TRI), expanding the total number of PFAS subject to reporting requirements to 205. TRI data, reported annually by facilities in certain industries and federal agencies, tracks the quantities of listed chemicals released into the environment or managed as waste. This information is made publicly available, enabling communities to monitor chemical management in their areas and supporting informed decision-making by companies, governments, and advocacy groups. The addition aligns with the Biden-Harris Administration’s commitment to environmental justice by enhancing transparency and accountability for families and workers.
The nine newly added PFAS were included under provisions of the Fiscal Year 2020 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which mandates the automatic inclusion of PFAS in the TRI following EPA’s finalization of toxicity values. Facilities subject to TRI requirements must begin tracking activities involving these chemicals as of January 1, 2025, with reporting forms due by July 1, 2026. The inclusion of these PFAS is part of broader EPA efforts to classify all TRI-listed PFAS as chemicals of special concern, eliminating exemptions that allowed facilities to forgo reporting on small concentrations. This action underscores the EPA’s commitment to providing communities with critical information about toxic chemical releases and advancing PFAS regulation.
